Dar Es Salaam - Germany has signed an €18m aid agreement with Tanzania, as part of its budget support and to help it in its fight against Aids.
Tanzania's ministry of finance and the German embassy in Dar
es Salaam said in a statement that €5m would go towards budget support.
"Essentially, this is general budget support," said Gray Mgonja, permanent secretary in the ministry.
In January Tanzania's key donors pledged $593m in budget support for the 2006/07 (July-June) financial year.
Another €8m will be use in the marketing of condoms and contraceptives in Tanzania's fight against HIV/Aids.
According to United Nations Aids agency, UNAids, about 1.6m Tanzanians are
infected with HIV, although the real figure could be even higher as many cases are not reported.
"We know the effect that this has had on the economy, on the population and on the lives of Tanzanians," Mgonja said.
