Washington - The United States on Tuesday issued a travel warning for Togo, and authorised non-essential US embassy personnel to leave the African state amid turmoil following its disputed presidential election.
It said the moves were prompted by "the unsettled security situation and sporadic post-election violence" that erupted on Tuesday after ruling party candidate Faure Gnassingbe was declared the winner of Sunday's vote
The State Department authorised the departure of non-emergency personnel and all eligible family members of US Embassy staff in Togo.
The department said it "urges US citizens to defer travel to Togo, and asks those Americans already in Togo to evaluate carefully their personal security when deciding whether to depart." - AFP
