Tunisia paper chief convicted for nude

Tunis - A Tunisian court has convicted and fined the publisher of a Tunisian newspaper for violating public morals by printing a photo of a football player's naked girlfriend.

Nasreddine Ben Saida's lawyer said he was fined $660 on Thursday and the court ordered all copies of the newspaper issue destroyed. Critics call the case an attack on media freedom in the country that sparked uprisings across the Arab world last year.

The Attounisia daily published a photo of German-Tunisian football player Sami Khedira of Real Madrid dressed in a tuxedo with his hands covering the breasts of his naked German model girlfriend, Lena Gercke.

The verdict comes amid concern by some in Tunisia about a growing ultraconservative Islamist movement after decades under an aggressively secular regime.
