Mexico City - Police have discovered a 210-metre-long tunnel likely used to smuggle drugs across the US-Mexico border, Mexican officials said on Monday.
The tunnel, hidden five metres below the surface, measures one metre wide by 1.2 metres high, and is equipped with sophisticated lighting and pumping systems, the Mexican attorney general's office said.
US police found the exit to the tunnel in the California town of Calexico, leading to the discovery of an entrance inside an abandoned house in Mexicali, Mexico.
Traces of marijuana were found inside the tunnel, officials said.
Tunnels under the US-Mexico border are common. In January, officials found the largest, most sophisticated tunnel to date, between Tijuana and San Diego. That tunnel was a kilometre long and located 26 metres below ground.
