Zanzibar - Two people are missing after a boat sank off Zanzibar, but 10 others including tourists were rescued, officials said on Monday, in the latest in a series of maritime tragedies on east Africa's coast.

The traditional wooden sailing boat - known as a dhow - sank on Sunday as it crossed from mainland Tanzania to the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar.

"Two people are still missing, fortunately 10 people have been rescued," said Abdallah Kombo, of the Zanzibar Maritime Authority. "The vessel was hit by a strong wave and capsized."

Police said the rescued included three Dutch tourists, while the search continues for the missing pair, a man and a woman from Tanzania.

Last month, at least 104 people - and possibly as many as 144 - died when the ferry MV Skagit sank in choppy waters as it crossed from the mainland to Zanzibar.

In September more than 200 people perished when the MV Spice Islander, which the authorities admitted was overloaded, sank while sailing between two of the main islands in the Zanzibar archipelago.
