Lagos - Gunmen on Wednesday attacked two villages in central Nigeria, killing six residents and burning two churches, an online newspaper reported.

Witnesses said five security officials were also killed, but police only confirmed the deaths of six civilians while saying five people were injured, the Premium Times said. A police spokesperson said security forces had been deployed in the area and that normality had been restored after the attacks in Gako and Tanjol in central Plateau State.

Initial reports did not say whether the attacks were thought to have been carried out by the radical group Boko Haram, which has killed thousands of people in its campaign for an Islamist state.
