Cape Town – The British government is reportedly in talks with Nigerian security forces to help free hundreds of Nigerian schoolgirls who were abducted three weeks ago by suspected Boko Haram Islamists.

According to The Telegraph, London said it stood ready to provide "practical assistance" as Nigerian troops were reported to be massing around a forest where at least 223 teenage girls were thought to be held.

Officials declined, however, to say what British help might include, said the report.

This comes as America's secretary of state John Kerry also said at the weekend that the US would do "everything possible" to assist.

Domestic criticism

Meanwhile an AP report said the west African country's president Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday vowed that his government would ensure the release of the girls.

The Nigerian government has faced fierce domestic criticism for its impotent response to the kidnapping and desperate parents have demanded it seek foreign aid if necessary to rescue their daughters.

Jonathan pleaded for the co-operation of parents, guardians and the local communities in the rescue efforts.

He said that Nigerians were "justified if they expressed their anger against government" over the perceived slowness in rescuing the girls who were kidnapped from their hostel in Chibok town, in northeast Borno state, on 14 April.
