London - The British government says up to 2 000 Libyan troops will be brought to the UK for basic infantry and junior leadership training.

Foreign Secretary William Hague says the Libyan government will cover the costs of the training, which will be carried out by the British army at Bassingbourn Barracks in southern England.

He told British lawmakers in a written statement on Tuesday that all the trainees will be fully vetted by the Libyan government, with checks on their medical, physical and behavioral suitability.

Hague said the Libyan government also has guaranteed that all troops successfully trained in the UK will be brought back to Libya and reintegrated into its armed forces.

The training builds on Britain's assistance to Libya on security matters in the wake of Muammar Gaddafi's ousting.
