New York - The UN peacekeeping chief says nearly half a million people were forced to flee new outbreaks of violence last year in Darfur.

Herve Ladsous told the Security Council on Thursday that about 400 000 people were forced to flee violence in the conflict-torn region of western Sudan in 2013 — more than the combined number in 2012 and 2011.

Ladsous said “the security situation is volatile and in fact deteriorated over the past year" and that any movement toward a peace process "has progressed very slowly".

Darfur has been gripped by violence since 2003 when rebels took up arms against the government.

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says none of the $1bn in long-term aid pledged by the international community to Darfur last April has been delivered.
