UN: Sudan police abuse women

Khartoum - Sudanese police charged with restoring calm in the war-torn western region of Darfur are sexually abusing women in displaced persons' camps, a UN report released Saturday said.

"IDPs (internally displaced persons) report increasing incidents of sexual abuse and exploitation in Abu Shouk Camp near El Fasher committed by police officers," said a UN weekly update on the humanitarian situation in North Darfur.

The report came as the United Nations said that Khartoum had proposed a list of 12 measures aimed at ending the crisis, including the creation of safe areas for the estimated 1.2m people who have been displaced.

The accusation was the latest in a string of damning indictments by UN agencies and relief groups of the the Sudanese authorities' continued involvement in abuses against civilians in Darfur.
