UN security council - criminalise piracy
New York - The UN Security Council has unanimously agreed to ask all countries around the world to make piracy a crime in light of the growing problem in Somalia.
Council members on Monday asked all UN member states to issue reports before year's end on measures they have taken to criminalise piracy. States are asked to support the prosecution of people suspected of piracy off Somalia's coast.
The council will examine further steps to establish courts in Somalia and nearby countries with international participation.
The council also points out the need for UN agencies and other international organisations to support and operate prisons to hold suspected pirates.
