UN staff alarmed at Mali attacks

New York - The United Nations Staff Union is expressing alarm at the unrelenting attacks on the UN force in Mali that have killed 26 peacekeepers and wounded more than 50 others this year.

The union and its security committee called on Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and all parties in Mali to take "all possible measures" to improve security for the peacekeepers.

"Those blatant attacks must stop and those responsible must be brought to justice," the union said in a statement on Tuesday.

In the deadliest attack on 3 October, nine UN peacekeepers were killed when their convoy was ambushed in the northeastern Gao region.

Northern Mali fell under control of Tuareg separatists and then al-Qaeda-linked Islamic extremists after a 2012 military coup.

A French-led intervention last year scattered the extremists, but some remain active.
