Monrovia - The United Nations Mission in Liberia (Unmil) said on Monday it has deployed 200 Irish troops in the troubled port city of Harper following claims that Model rebels were harassing Liberian forces in the area.
Unmil Chief Military Information Officer Lieutenant Colonel Borjee Jos Hansen told Unmil radio on Monday that troops from the Irish contingent's Rapid Response Unit airlifted to the port city on Sunday.
"The Irish troops have secured the airstrip and port and will bring calm to the area," Jos Hansen said.
He said the Irish troops would be followed by a battalion of Senegalese troops expected in the country next week.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Jos Hansen, the Senegalese troops will also cover Grand Kru and River Gee Counties which have been the scenes of harassment, intimidation and mayhem by Model troops.
Local residents said they were forced to feed Model troops and pay dues on a daily basis. - Sapa-dpa
