US: We mustn't relish Gaddafi death footage

2011-10-26 08:57

Los Angeles - US President Barack Obama took issue on Tuesday with the broadcasting of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's bloody demise, saying even those who had done "terrible things" deserved decorum in death.

Gaddafi was buried in a secret desert location on Tuesday, five days after he was captured, killed and put on grisly public display. The former leader was seen on video being mocked, beaten and abused before he died.

"That's not something that I think we should relish," Obama told Jay Leno on NBC's "Tonight Show", when asked his feelings about the footage being televised. "I think that there's a certain decorum with which you treat the dead even if it's somebody who has done terrible things."

Obama noted that his administration had not released a photograph of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's body after US commandos killed him in Pakistan earlier this year.

The president said Gaddafi had missed a chance to bring democracy to his country.

"You never like to see anybody come to the kind of end that he did, but I think it obviously sends a strong message around the world to dictators that ... people long to be free," Obama said.

"He had an opportunity during the Arab Spring to finally let loose of his grip on power and to peacefully transition into democracy. We gave him ample opportunity, and he wouldn't do it."

I have to say I found it all very disturbing. People keep asking what's going on, if we can celebrate the death of anyone in such a gory inhuman way then we should be asking ourselves what's wrong with us.

      Who is "us"?

Everyone, no ones perfect so before judging others and passing the blame we need to identify our own flaws and do our best to fix them for a better future...

thank you obama for seeing the madness surrounding this whole thing. He might have had his faults but to have his dead body put on public display in such a manner was disrespectful and barbaric

I agree it is despicable how the whole Gaddaffi thing has come to a conclusion. Although I personally doubt the sincerity behind Obama's words. I still think they tortured Osama about as much as Gaddaffi was tortured, but they had the sense to do it in secret.

Remember in the biblical time with the death of Saul and his sons. Their heads were chopped off and the bodies were hung where everyone could see them. If you can still cut off the hand of a thief and stone a woman caught in adultery, then displaying a dead tirant is quite normal for some africans.

Not only Africans, Arabs do it too.

I do agree with Mr Obama on the fact that the footage and the way Gaddafi was being treated after his death was bad What worries me is the fact that He says they gave him the chance who are their and what role did their play in all this ?

    Bloody Agents!!!

Gaddafi was murdered and pictures of him displayed on international news. Christian America celebrates the torture and murder. The World Celebrates murder. In two years times the West will have deal with the extremists who MURDERED this dictator. These NTC extremist execute 500 pro-gaddafi supporters. I see no differences between the regime and these thugs, the west thinks its form of democracy will be the order of the day....actually they don't care about that, its pay back time and the siphoning of the countries resources will begin.
