Abuja - The United States (US) closed its consulate in the Nigerian city of Lagos on Thursday, citing unspecified security problems that could affect both countries.
The mission was closed temporarily to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians and Americans doing business in the office, and was also in the interest of the two nations, a US statement said.
Nigeria's ministry of foreign affairs said the country was committed to its obligations to the consulate and would do everything to ensure there was no security breach at the office or in any consular office in Nigeria.
Nigeria's top police official, Sunday Ehindero, said he has ordered a reinforcement of riot police officers to the consulate.
