US drone crashes at Seychelles airport

2011-12-13 16:37

Nairobi - US officials say an American military drone has crashed at an airport on the island nation of Seychelles.

The US embassy in Mauritius said the US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper drone was not armed and that the crash on Tuesday morning caused no injuries.

It said that the airport's runaway has reopened for normal traffic. The US military and the civilian aviation authority of Seychelles are co-ordinating to remove the debris of the drone.

The US has used drones from the Seychelles to target al-Qaeda linked militants in Somalia.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Heard at the skeet shooting facility of a upmarket beach hotel: 1. "Oh dear...darling, was that a seagull...I didn't mean to shoot it...honestly, I was trying to shoot the skeet..." 2. "Uh...it was larger than a seagull...probably a gannet or...oh dear, maybe it was a rare albatros" 1. "Hang on...its not a bird at all...look through my binoculars...it looks like a model plane...quite large..." 2. "Well, in that case...only a fool flies his radio controlled plane near any shooting range...probably som American kid at the hotel...there goes his christmas present..."
