Cape Town – An American family has told how they were rescued from the siege at Nairobi’s Westgate mall by Abdul Haji, the son of a former security minister in the Kenyan government, a report says.

According to The Telegraph, Katherine Walton and her three girls survived the attack after Haji noticed the family huddled under a table.

Haji saw the Waltons as he stood with a fellow rescuer crouched outside the Nakumatt supermarket.

The report said Haji asked them to move towards them but they could not.

Haji then asked Katherine if one of the older children could be encouraged to run towards him.

Katherine’s oldest daughter Portia emerged and ran across the deserted corridor.

Soon, the whole Walton family emerged one by one and ran with Haji and other rescuers until they reached the police lines outside the mall.

The report comes as Kenyans seek more answers to the attack that killed more than 60 people.
