Washington - US election experts will likely travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo early next month to advise on the vote count for November parliamentary polls, a State Department official said on Tuesday.

The African country's electoral commission said on Monday it had halted the vote count for November 28 parliamentary elections until experts arrive from the United States and Britain, but the process was due to resume on Wednesday.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) is handling the monitors issue, a State Department official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"USAID is discussing the provision of elections experts with several well-regarded organisations and expects that a team will arrive in Kinshasa during the first week of January," the official said.

The official did not say where the monitors will come from but US organisations like the Carter Centre, the International Republican Institute, and the National Democratic Institute have monitored elections worldwide.

Faced with many claims of vote-rigging, the Democratic Republic of Congo's independent national electoral commission (CENI) suspended the compilation of election results on December 21.

The commission said it wished "to guarantee the transparency and credibility" of the process while waiting for "international technical support".

Some 19 000 candidates were standing for the 500 seats in the National Assembly of the huge central African country, which in 2003 began to emerge from massive back-to-back wars.

"We must work together to avoid the situation of incomprehension" that marked the presidential poll, which was also held on November 28, CENI Vice President Jacques Djoli said.

Incumbent President Joseph Kabila was declared the winner, with 48.95% of the votes, beating veteran opposition politician Etienne Tshisekedi, who took 32.33%.

Kabila was sworn back into office last Tuesday, while Tshisekedi, who strongly contests his defeat, had himself sworn in by his aides and followers at his Kinshasa home last Friday.

The results of the parliamentary polls are due to be announced on January 13.

The United States said earlier this month that the elections were "seriously flawed", and urged the Congolese authorities to review the results openly and transparently.

Ridwaan Moola says... Mr Anthony, I know of a few incidents in history that hold white suicide bombers... Are they Christian,Jewish , Muslim ??? Never stated! It's a belief that has been made to be true within the media that Muslims project violence... U talk about petty theft, and that suicide bombing being the worst of crime.. In MY OPINION , can a crime of any nature be called the worst? To the person who has suffered the crime is not their violation the worst... I ask this based on a person who may have been hijacked? A person who may have been raped or even gang raped ? A mother , sister , wife , daughter , son , husband , father ect who has lost a loved one due to the greed and violence of another ?? I think that statement should be thought of properly my friend , islam forbids any type of malice toward anyone, and in fact promotes tolerance amongst everyone... I'm not here to give you a lecture on the promotion of religion,as I'm sure no religion believes in harming another... But in reality, the only known religion according to the media that has a violent streak is Islam, take note of any past or future article of a crime, the persons religion is never brought in , nationality or race is the description ! It's a wonder what the world , or should I say, who in the world ?? wants us to believe what's in the media , I think it's time we all used logic instead of just following the masses... And I thank you for the last statement in your response, I for one do not condone the killing of innocent ppl Read the article...
