US welcomes Kenya deal

Washington - The United States on Sunday welcomed Kenya's power-sharing agreement, calling it an "important first step" toward a solving the country's political crisis, and urging prompt institutional reforms.

"The US welcomes the announcement by President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister-designate Raila Odinga that they have reached agreement on the composition of the coalition cabinet," state department spokesperson Sean McCormack said in a statement.

He commended the two leaders for "making the courageous decisions necessary to move the nation forward. Formation of the cabinet is an important step along the road toward full implementation of the political accord".

The spokesperson called on Kibaki and Odinga to "maintain momentum by moving quickly to carry out institutional reforms, particularly with respect to revision of the constitution, reform of the electoral process, and land issues.

"We also urge them to personally lead efforts to promote reconciliation," McCormack said, adding that the US was ready to provide "strong support for the coalition government" as it works to improve the lives of all Kenyans.

The new 42-member cabinet replaced the 17-member government that Kibaki had hastily assembled after his contested re-election in December.

Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) had accused Kibaki of stealing the election and both parties blamed the other for the ensuing eruption of violence that claimed 1 500 lives nationwide and left hundreds of thousands displaced.

The power-sharing agreement was brokered by former United Nations chief Kofi Annan, amid intense international pressure for Kibaki and Odinga to bring an end to the unrest.

Ridwaan Moola says... Mr Anthony, I know of a few incidents in history that hold white suicide bombers... Are they Christian,Jewish , Muslim ??? Never stated! It's a belief that has been made to be true within the media that Muslims project violence... U talk about petty theft, and that suicide bombing being the worst of crime.. In MY OPINION , can a crime of any nature be called the worst? To the person who has suffered the crime is not their violation the worst... I ask this based on a person who may have been hijacked? A person who may have been raped or even gang raped ? A mother , sister , wife , daughter , son , husband , father ect who has lost a loved one due to the greed and violence of another ?? I think that statement should be thought of properly my friend , islam forbids any type of malice toward anyone, and in fact promotes tolerance amongst everyone... I'm not here to give you a lecture on the promotion of religion,as I'm sure no religion believes in harming another... But in reality, the only known religion according to the media that has a violent streak is Islam, take note of any past or future article of a crime, the persons religion is never brought in , nationality or race is the description ! It's a wonder what the world , or should I say, who in the world ?? wants us to believe what's in the media , I think it's time we all used logic instead of just following the masses... And I thank you for the last statement in your response, I for one do not condone the killing of innocent ppl Read the article...
