Kampala - An injured elephant went on a rampage in northern Uganda, killing three people and injuring three others before being brought back to a national park, wildlife officials said Friday.

"The male elephant had minor wounds on the neck and back. It must have fought with other animals," Uganda Wildlife Authority spokesperson Jossy Muhangi told dpa.

The elephant's injuries apparently sent it on a rampage in several villages, including Adakober-iot and Ewari, on Wednesday.

Two of the victims died on the spot and the third at hospital, Muhangi said. Three others were seriously injured.

The elephant also pulled down several huts before being driven back to its home in Murchison Falls National Park.

Local villages are often raided by stray elephants coming from Uganda's largest conservation area, which houses 4 000 out of the East African country's 5 000 elephants. Local officials said they would ask the government to compensate the families of the deceased.
