Kampala - A Ugandan general who sparked a debate on presidential succession says he's fighting for freedom from oppression by state institutions and agents whose goal is to keep the country's long-serving president in power.

In a statement to The Associated Press on Wednesday, General David Sejusa - who is in London - described the Ugandan military as a "prison" used by the president to prevent ambitious officers from challenging him. He said he's one of many officers whose wish to retire has been denied.

He warned against "abusing the law and institutions just to keep the current leadership in power".

Sejusa recently wrote a letter to the internal security service urging an investigation into reports that those opposed to the rise of Museveni's son risk assassination.

The army accuses him of spreading propaganda.
