Zambian miners kill Chinese manager

2012-08-05 15:42

Lusaka - Zambian coal miners killed a Chinese mine manager and injured his colleague in a riot over wages at a mine known for tensions with the Chinese investor in southern Zambia, state media reported.

"Wu Shengzai, aged 50, has been killed by protesting workers after being hit by a trolley which was pushed towards him by the rioting miners as he ran away into the underground where he wanted to seek refugee. He died on the spot while his colleague is in hospital," Southern province police commissioner Fred Mutondo told state news agency the Zambia News and Information Services on Sunday.

The injured manager is also Chinese.

Zambian mineworkers on Saturday rioted during a strike at the Chinese-owned Collum Coal mine in Sinazongwe, 325km south of the capital Lusaka to protest delays in implementing a new minimum wage.

Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda told AFP he would investigate the incident.

"The killing is regrettable and I don't understand why there is always tension between Chinese investors and workers at Collum," he said.

In 2010 two Chinese Collum mine managers were charged with attempted murder after they allegedly opened fire on a group of protesting miners. Eleven Zambian workers were injured in the incident and the mine has since then been a source of controversy between Chinese investors and Zambians.

Chinese own several mines in the southern African countries, including coal and copper operations.

Chinese investment in Zambia topped $bn in 2010.

BRICS meeting the Bricks from Zambia...

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-08-05 15:58

Having spoken to Zambians who've worked in Chinese controlled mines, it seems the Chinese are even more tyrannical than any former Western colonialists. The workers have little or no means to get the abuses addressed and of course a corrupt system - determined to keep the Chinese investors investing - ends up preferring the investor over the citizen.

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-08-05 16:10

The Chinese thought they can just come in & build a few new infrastructure projects, take all the African raw materials and replace that with cheap products made in China.Africans are fedup with that and it shows. The African Governments made these underhanded deals with China in exchange for quick cash in their bank accounts, and the poor man on the street is still living in a mudhut or shanty village. Wake up China you can't just ignore basic human standards of life and offer people very little in return. The Colonial powers of Europe before you did such k^k and at some point it has to stop. Good, responsible government in Africa is very rare indeed and they both,China and Africa, will ruin what's still left in the continent for greedy, commercial gains.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-08-05 16:25

@sean - it makes my head hurt to figure out how, when Africa has the upper hand (having everything that China's hungry for), the Chinese still manage to out-play them. Seems history is destined to repeat itself with terminal short-sightedness, essentially selling their own people off into slavery. Fundamental thinking skills and negotiating techniques are the only resources Africa seems to lack

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-08-05 17:54

Chinese "investments" must be the "con" of the twentyfirst centuary. They only 'invest' on THEIR terms, like not paying taxes for 25 years ( Ghana ! ) They bring their own labour and the few local ones they employ, exployd them and treat them like 'dogs' Kick these rubbish Chinese out of Africa !!!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-08-06 09:09

So Anthony, do entertain us, instead of calling names, argue some FACTS, and try to convince us that 400 years of Western "tutelage" was somehow good for Africa, and why the Africans should continue to say "how high" when told by their Western ex-masters to jump.

  • bob.small.7547 - 2012-08-05 15:54

Now they realise that the Chinese are just there to rape them of their life...!

      kevin.pitzer - 2012-08-05 19:14

@Rodney these Chinese have been doing this all over Africa and it seems we will soon see within a few years a new owner of this continent where colonization by the Europeans was soft .I have personally witnessed short term gain of our deciders but in the end complaints about Verwoerd in comparison to our current future are child’s play. What is equally as shocking is people choose an obviously new colonizer over the offspring of old who has not gapped the continent and left, surely this should show trust as those who did not agree have gone. Never the less we are all in for a huge change and only sensibility from our fellow Africans can stop this onslaught as soon we will all be saying yes baaas to the Chinese.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-08-06 08:22

But you missed the main difference between the European and the Chinese behavior in African soil, that it's not the Chinese intention to turn African countries into Chinese's overseas colonies. China only wants to trade with Africa, not make us fluent in mandarin and/or make us Ph.D in Confucianism.

      U mean the Chinese ?

  • veldt66 - 2012-08-05 16:03

I fully agree with the actions of these workers!!!!

  • kevin.pitzer - 2012-08-05 16:06

Finally someone stood up to the abusive labour practices the Chinese are getting away with all over Africa.Hopefully they will realise that labour laws need be respected by all employers and can not be broken purely because their Government has done some obscure deal with their African host country.

      patrick.mettle.7 - 2012-08-05 16:49

That's right. Let's make sure they obey Labour laws. Killing on the other hand is not unlawful so let's do that when others break a law. What a fckuing wnkaer!!

  • harold.parsons.37 - 2012-08-05 16:43

I fully sympathize with the Zambians the chinese have been abusing them long enough and have also been resposible for many deaths in the mines because of thier safety practices. MR Sata must come true to his word and chase the Chinese away.

  • lisa.farkass - 2012-08-05 16:49

Good for the Africans.....stand up to the Chinese exploiters.....!!!

  • douglas.reid.921 - 2012-08-05 17:32

Africans don't understand chinese work ethic

  • tommo.too - 2012-08-05 18:02

China doesn't know what they have got themselves into. Africa also not. In 20 years time I predict a very stormy relationship. To Africa, don't say we didn't warn you!

  • CORNHOLIO - 2012-08-05 19:56

"The killing is regrettable and I don't understand why there is always tension between Chinese investors and workers at Collum," you shoot at people & it pisses them off go figure

  • douglas.reid.921 - 2012-08-05 20:05

China have 3 times more people than America, they are cash rich, they control their people with an iron fist. Step out of line in china and you could get executed. They don't have any religious issues so they don't fight amongst themselves. They will integrate into any society and marry any racial group. They are clever, hard-working and they are here. Americans are fat and lazy and debt ridden. Their society is in decline. China doesn't have to engage in conventional war, they will simply carry on business as usual. In time they will just own everything. I drive a Chinese car, scooter, wear chinese clothes, shoes, have a chinese laptop etc etc etc. If you would believe that America can continue to be the major player you have missed the point, this is the fall of the american empire. The only other country that is a contender is india, their problem is they have religious, tribal and cultural issues that divide them.

      Chaapo - 2012-08-05 20:34

It is the business as usual of sweatshops and abused workers under authoritarian rule that will get them killed in Africa. Wear, use and sleep Chinese all you want but that will not come at the cost of African workers whose resources are being raped with the connivance of governments when the people who work to make this cabal rich have nothing to show for their labour.

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-08-06 08:46

@chaapo sithole: I hope you are right but if you read Douglas post you will see that they vastly outnumber Africans in Africa and while Africans may be willing to die for their various causes and culture numbers always count in the end. The Orientals invented gunpowder and torture and where are all the weapons in Africa coming from but China. The Chinese arre helping the Africans kill each other off while using those who are over fighting as slave labour. There are more men than women in China because of their one child per family policy so they have plenty of frustrated men, highly disciplined and prepared to die because they have even less to live for than Africans. You ain't seen nothing yet and I believe too that America is a spent force as is UK.

  • yuu.mee.351 - 2012-08-05 20:13

    Idiots

  • Chaapo - 2012-08-05 20:29

"I don't understand why there is always tension between Chinese investors and workers at Collum" That is because these bureaucrats do not live under the thumbs of the Chinese masters and for the sake of keeping investments they turn a deaf ear to the complaints of unfair labour practices. They have sold their souls to the corporations for little gains and sacrificed their nationals in the process and so this is the result.

  • Helio - 2012-08-05 20:36

i recently worked at a mine run by a blue chip SA mining company, with all the perks and benefits enjoyed by all employees, during wage negotiations one of the union shop steward said he wished the chinese would take over the mine......go figure...i hope he reads this article!!!

  • fidel.mgoqi - 2012-08-06 08:20

Africa is confident that China will not colonise Africa because China understands the humiliation of colonisation from its own experience.

      Brandon - 2012-08-06 08:47

And if they really not happy they could always just nationalise the mines. Exactly what should be happening in South Africa.

  • warwick.bristow - 2012-08-06 09:01

The Chinese. The new imperialist colonialists, just out to exploit others for their own gain at the expense of the people.
