Lusaka  -Zambia's independence hero and first president Kenneth Kaunda was discharged from hospital on Tuesday, four days after being admitted with an undisclosed ailment, medical sources said.

"Dr Kaunda has been discharged, he is no longer at the hospital," University Teaching Hospital managing director Lackson Kasonka told AFP.

Kaunda, 88, was the first post-independence president of Zambia, a position he held from 1964 to 1991.

The former leader was admitted to hospital after the death of his wife, Betty, who died in Zimbabwe on 19 September.

Her funeral had to be postponed from Sunday last week to Friday, to allow the much-loved elder statesman time to recover.

If he wanted to steal the limelight from Betty - he should have done the world a favour and died, but i guess you don't die from shedding a few crocodile tears, must have left his onion wrapped hankie in Houghton.
