Abuja - Donors in Malawi have expressed concern over levels of poverty affecting the population, despite billions of dollars being pumped into the country annually, Malawi24 reports.

Germany's ambassador to Malawi, Peter Woeste, voiced his concern, claiming that donor aid had yielded little results in the past years.

"I have observed that we did not really move for the past five years, there are different reasons despite donors coming together and investing in Malawi,” Woeste stated.

Woeste said Malawi had failed to move forward economically, compared to its neighbours, Nyasa Times reported.

"The current policies need to be changed to meet the changing times," he was quoted as saying.

He said the current economic frameworks were working to fuel poverty, instead of uplifting Malawian citizens.

The ambassador called for more aid from donor companies, arguing that the country could not develop unless more support was provided for the ailing economy.

Malawi had previously lost up to 40% of its budget support aid due to corruption within the country's government offices, according to VOA News.
