Accra - Former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan has said that ending world hunger is "well within our reach" giving four ways in which the scourge can be ended in Africa.

According to CNNAnnan pointed to the fact that since 1990, the amount of malnourished people had been halved while also saying that still today, 800 million men, women and children went hungry.

He said that keeping hunger on domestic and international agendas, building effective partnerships, helping countries become self-sufficient and finding more funding were the four ways to end hunger.

"Developing country leaders, private sector companies, donors, NGOs and others now have the chance to achieve something incredible within our lifetimes," Annan said.

Hunger and malnutrition has long been plaguing the African continent with heavy droughts in southern Africa a recent example, as News24 reported previously.

The region was still reeling from the effects of the El Nino weather phenomenon which devastated crops, leaving at least 18 million people in need of food aid, according to the World Food Programme.
