Cape Town – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has taken a swipe at some leaders on the continent, accusing them of causing their people to suffer, a report says.

Delivering her New Year message in Addis Ababa on Tuesday, Dlamini-Zuma reportedly singled out South Sudan where at least 500 000 people have been killed and around two million displaced, as violent atrocities continue to be committed against civilians.

According to eNCA, Dlamini-Zuma also blamed the leaders of Burundi, Central African Republic and Gambia for the crises in their nations.

"Our governments and leadership are there to protect the vulnerable, to serve the people, not to be the cause of the people’s suffering and retrogression," Dlamini-Zuma was quoted as saying.

She continued: "Enough is enough. Africans deserve better, and we must all work towards better days, and towards peace, stability and development."

Dlamini-Zuma's remarks came as reports on Wednesday said that the head of Gambia's electoral commission had fled to Senegal "fearing a plot against him".

Alieu Momar Njie’s relatives confirmed that he fled to Senegal "after he got information that the Gambian authorities were plotting against him and his team" after he declared on December 2 that Yahya Jammeh lost elections following 22 years in power.
