Johannesburg - A veteran newspaper editor from Lesotho is in critical condition after being shot outside his home in the country's capital Maseru.

Lloyd Mutungamiri, the editor of the Lesotho Times and the Sunday Express, was attacked late on Saturday, according to a regional media freedom watchdog the Media Institute of Southern Africa.

Mutungamiri had been brought in for questioning twice last month after the Lesotho Times published two reports that allegedly defamed the commander of the country's defence force.

No arrests had been made.

Mutangamiri was said to be in a stable condition in a South African hospital.
