Windhoek - The livestock of 12 families evicted from a farm belonging to a Namibian diplomat have been put up for auction to recover alleged losses incurred due to their occupation of the property.

According to a local newspaper, the New Era, approximately 500 animals being held on the farm, which is said to be the property of Namibia's High Commissioner to Nigeria, Peinghondjabi Shipoh, will be auctioned off on Friday, February 19.

The development follows the eviction of the families on Monday, leaving them homeless without alternative accommodation.

Shipoh is alleged to have incurred losses of over N$80 000 as a result of the eviction. Any surplus money made from the auction, however, will not be given back to the families nor will they have any of their animals returned to them.

The high commissioner has since defended his actions, saying he lost patience after numerous attempts to have the families move off the property, which he acquired in 2011.

According to a previous News24 report, approximately 100 people belonging to the group had been affected

Good Samaritans have since brought the group bread, sugar, bags of meal-meal and fish, while alternative accommodation is sought.
