Lilongwe - A 31-year-old Malawian national was facing jail time over the alleged defilement of three young girls aged 7, 8 and 10, Nyasa Times has reported.

The suspect, Sadick Fadiek Goliati, was alleged to have forced his victims into performing sexual acts after they visited him under the assumption that they would be assisting him with errands.

Following the attack, which took place in the Kasungu District of the country, Goliati was alleged to have offered the girls K100 each in exchange for their silence.

The development marked the latest in a string of attacks on Malawian youth, making child sexual abuse the most reported crime in the southern African nation.

Kenyan charity Ujamaa was reported to have since taken up the task of creating awareness around the scourge of violence facing Malawian youths, with the group training children to fight against sexual abuse.

The organisation, which consists of just 50 instructors, trained 25 000 of Malawi's children in self-awareness, self-respect and defence skills, reports said.

According to preliminary findings from a survey conducted on 11 460 Malawian girls under 18, one in five girls had been raped, with the figure jumping to one in three in two of the country's districts.
