Lilongwe - A thief drowned in the Malawian capital of Lilongwe on Wednesday following a hot pursuit by members of a neighborhood watch, Malawi24 has reported.

According to officials in the area, the man was alleged to have broken into a house, along with other members of a local gang.

Members of the neighborhood watch became aware of the incident after a guard called for help upon discovering the men inside the residence.

While attempting to escape on foot, the suspect fell into a nearby sewage pool and drowned.

A post-mortem examination revealed that the deceased died as a result of suffocation.

The development came just a few months after a body was discovered floating in a sewer in the southern city of Blantyre.

According to a previous Malawi24 report, it was believed that the man was murdered before being dumped in the waste facility.

The body was said to have been discovered by children who were playing near the sewerage area.

Malawi's sewer system had been an issue of contention in recent times, with the Malawian Times reporting that much of the system had collapsed, resulting in thousands of litres of waste-water and sludge draining into streams and rivers across the country.
