Lilongwe - The search continues for a Malawian truck driver who went missing following an attack on his vehicle by militia in Mozambique, Nyasa Times reports.

The driver, an employee of Malawi's Zagaf Trucks, was one of three men who were attacked on Saturday while en route to their home country.

The other two drivers were said to have turned up in Malawi on Sunday.

Government spokesperson Patricia Kaliati assured citizens that officials from both countries were "in touch" with each other and were "working together".

This came as Malawian government officials expressed concern over an increased number of murders involving truck drivers from the southern African country travelling through Mozambique.

Malawi's foreign affairs spokesperson Rejoice Shumba confirmed the destruction of at least R1.4m in fuel belonging to the southern African nation.

News24 reported last week that Mozambique's rebel group, the National Resistance Movement (Renamo), had intensified its attacks on vehicles plying the main highways of the country.

The group, which at first targeted police units and state facilities, was now reportedly attacking foreigners and foreign vehicles that use Mozambican routes.

According to Enwell Kadango, general manager of Malawi's Petroleum Importers Limited, between 20 and 50 Malawian tankers passed through Mozambican routes on daily basis, raising the need for military intervention in the matter.
