Lilongwe - A Malawian community has been left terrified following the gang-rape and subsequent murder of a female resident in the area.

According to the Nyasa Times, the Kantimbanya village in the Blantyre district has been gripped by fear since the discovery of the victim's corpse on Tuesday.

The deceased, Brenda Mujoza, was said to have been walking back home when she was attacked by a group of men who raped and strangled her, before dumping her lifeless boy in a nearby stream.

A post-mortem examination conducted on her confirmed that she had been raped and strangulated in addition to sustaining several fractures.

Rape has become a contentious issue in the country in recent times, with three women in the country having challenged a law that they claimed prevented women from gaining justice in rape cases.

According to All Africa, the women took to the courts last year in an effort to overturn an 18th century law in the country that stated that rape victims must provide a witness or medical evidence in order to gain a conviction against their assailants.

The plaintiffs in the case claimed that a favourable ruling would be a step in the right direction to making sure that victims of rape received justice.
