Abuja - A village head has been arrested in Nigeria following a claim that he defiled and infected a 13-year-old girl with HIV.

According to Vanguard, the suspect was apprehended on Monday after he was reported to officials by the girl's parents.

The suspect was also suspended from his position as traditional head of his village.

Reports indicate that the girl was due to be married off to a suitor when it was found that she had been infected with the virus.

Upon interrogation, the girl revealed that she had been sleeping with the village head. The man was then tested and found to be an HIV carrier.

The development is the latest in a scourge of child rape cases despite harsh legislation being passed in order to protect Nigerian children.

According to an International Business Times report, rapists in the country could face life sentences following a bill that was passed through the Nigerian Senate last year.

The new legislation, however, has done little to curb child abusers, with a similar occurrence having taken place last year.

An Information Nigeria report revealed that a teacher based in the country's Adamawa State was suspected of having infected thirteen students with HIV.

The outcome of the case, however, could not be ascertained.
