Kinshasa - A large python was shot dead on Wednesday morning after it was found to have invaded the farm of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, the Daily Monitor reports.

According to one of the policemen at the scene, the serpent had to be shot three times after it turned violent.

"We were terrified by such a huge and dangerous creature and that's why we had to kill it to secure our lives and protect the 'big man's' cattle. One bullet was shot in the head and other two bullets in the abdomen," he said.

The snake was reported to have weighed around 80kg and was 6m in length. It was still allegedly being kept in a shelter on the property.

The development followed just a few days after three suspects were confirmed to have been arrested after it was found that they had stolen cattle from the same farm, according to another Daily Monitor report.

One of the suspects was said to have been an employee at the farm and was caught with three cows belonging to Museveni.

Meanwhile, the east African country's  First lady Janet Museveni hailed her husband as a "blessing" to the east African country, as she congratulated him on his birthday.

Museveni's wife, who is also the minister of education, said this in a birthday message on social media.

Museveni turned 72 on Thursday.
