Cape Town - A 1 100 carat diamond found in Botswana will be auctioned off in a secret road-show.

The largest diamond uncovered in over a century, and the second largest in the world, was officially named on Tuesday, after 11 000 entries were suggested since January 18, Reuters reported.

The gem named "Lesedi La Rona", which means “Our Light”, was pulled from the ground in November by Lucara Diamond at its Karowe mine in Botswana.

CEO and President of Lucara, William Lamb, said on the company's website: "The outpouring of pride and patriotism shown by all the participants in the contest was incredible.

“‘Lesedi La Rona’ symbolises the pride and history of the people of Botswana."

Lamb told Reuters at an African mining conference in Cape Town that the road show is to showcase the stone to any potential buyer, but wouldn’t give away any locations, as the company wanted to “protect its asset” through exclusive invites.

“The biggest challenge on the road show is that the weight to value ratio of the stone makes it potentially the highest-value item on the planet,” he added.
