Kenya in political limbo, as election dispute intensifies with conflicting claims

Nairobi - A dispute over Kenya's presidential election intensified Thursday when supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga said an unofficial tally showed that he won — a claim that conflicted with a provisional official result that put incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta in the lead.

Although most of the east African nation was calm after Tuesday's vote, scattered clashes broke out between police and opposition supporters.

Mugabe's nephew hits out at 'charlatan' VP Mnangagwa

Harare – President Robert Mugabe's nephew Patrick Zhuwao has reportedly taken aim at Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, claiming that he is leading a group of "charlatans", who are not suitable to take over power from the veteran leader. 

Zhuwao said this, during a public dialogue themed the "legacy of the heroes, challenges and opportunities for the youth" in Harare this week. 

According to New Zimbabwe.com, Zhuwao reiterated the First Lady Grace Mugabe's calls for her ageing husband to anoint his successor.

'Uhuru Kenyatta must go,' Kenya opposition demands

Nairobi - Kenya's opposition demanded Thursday that its candidate Raila Odinga be declared president, rejecting results that showed him trailing incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta in a fraught election that has sent jitters through the east African nation.

Celebrations erupted in opposition strongholds that have also seen angry protests over Odinga's rigging claims, which sparked a gloomy sense of deja vu in a country that witnessed disputed polls in 2007 and 2013.

Libya navy bars foreign ships from migrant 'search and rescue' zone

Tripoli - The Libyan navy on Thursday ordered foreign vessels to stay out of a coastal "search and rescue zone" for migrants headed for Europe, a measure it said targeted NGOs.

Six years since a revolution that toppled longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has become a key departure point for migrants risking their lives to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.

Tens of thousands of migrants have resorted to paying people traffickers for the journey, often on overcrowded and unseaworthy boats.

Kenya to update on election in mid-afternoon

Nairobi - Kenya's election commission is urging the country to be patient and says it should have an update on the presidential election in mid-afternoon (1130 GMT).

Many Kenyans are hoping the results of the already disputed vote will be announced within hours.

Hundreds of police in anti-riot gear are patrolling the capital, Nairobi. Many businesses remain closed amid fears of violence.

Zim controversial businessman arrested over coup remarks

Harare – Police have arrested Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa's ally, controversial businessman Energy Mutodi, for allegedly suggesting that a coup was likely in Zimbabwe if President Robert Mugabe failed to "carefully choose his successor".

"It is true; he has been charged with undermining the authority of the president in contravention of Section 33 of the Criminal Codification and Reforms Act and causing disaffection among the police force or defense force in contravention of the Criminal Code," said Mtetwa.
