Kampala - Zambians have castigated President Edgar Lungu over the remarks he made in Uganda last week when he attended President Yoweri Museveni's swearing-in ceremony.

Speaking soon after his arrival in Uganda, Lungu called on members of Uganda's opposition to accept defeat and recognise Museveni as the country's president.

Lungu urged opposition members to bow to the will of the Ugandan majority.

"Let the opposition parties accept the will of the people and accept the win of President Museveni because he went through elections and won," Lungu said.

According to New Vision, the southern African country's leader also mocked the opposition leaders, telling them to change their candidates because they had "failed to win any election in the past".

Lungu's comments, however, sparked rage on social media, with some calling on him to acknowledge failures and challenges in his own county.

Lungu, however, defended his comments, saying that he had no apologies to make. He maintained that the will of people should be allowed to prevail in elections on the continent.

"The people’s will should always be reflected in an election and people should learn to accept results. That is the most important thing. That is the message I have for Africa, the Ugandans and Zambians. Let us accept the will of the people," he was quoted as saying.
