Lusaka – Zambian President Edgar Lungu's ally Davis Chama has reportedly taken a swipe at the country's politics, describing it as "full of lies and hate".

According to The Post, Chama, who is the secretary general for the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) party, said this while speaking to a a new political grouping calling itself "Christians for Edgar Lungu" in Lusaka.

The group is backing Lungu in the country's forthcoming elections.

Chama questioned his role in what he called "the deceptive political environment", saying, however, that Christianity was the reason why he remained a politician.

He described the political environment as "scary".

"The politics of nowadays are of lies; every day they are politics of hate. There are people who are 24/7 creating [lies]…even today as I was coming, someone called me and told me a big lie about the president," Chama was quoted as saying.

Chama's utterances came as police on Monday arrested the vice president of the main opposition, the United Party for National Development (UPND) party.

Godfrey Mwamba was detained following president Lungu's accusations that the party was  training a private militia of up to 250 young men.

Zambia is preparing to go to the polls on August 11.
