Nairobi - At least six South Africans, including two children, were trapped during a shootout at a mall in Kenya, the Sunday Independent reported.

South Africa's High Commissioner to Kenya Super Moloi reportedly told the newspaper he had been in SMS contact with a couple hiding in a fire escape passage at the Westgate mall in Nairobi. "We advised them to stay put and wait for the security forces to move in," he was quoted as saying. According to the Sunday Independent, Moloi said he later discovered a second South African couple, with two young children, was also trapped in the mall.

All six were rescued.

The gunmen in the attack on Saturday had opened fire on people who were using cellphones. Associated Press reported that the standoff between police and the gunmen was still continuing on Sunday, and that there were still hostages inside the mall.

According to the latest reports, more than 40 people have died and 200 were injured
