Pastor Evan Mawarire 'a great shame', says Mugabe

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has described as "great shame" the self-exiled cleric Evan Mawarire after his planned protest against the veteran leader in New York failed last week.

Harare – Police in Zimbabwe's eastern Chiadzwa diamond fields have arrested two police officers, a soldier and three villagers in the past few days after they were found in possession of diamonds, the state-run Manica Post newspaper reported on Friday.

The newspaper, which is published in nearby Mutare, said: "Police officers Clemence Muteliso, 24, and Chakauya Mberikwazvo, 39, who were in the company of three villagers, were arrested after they were allegedly caught with 20kg of diamond ore near the closed Anjin Diamond Mine."

In a separate incident, soldier Holder Mvura, 25, was found with 14 diamonds in his wallet and a pocket of his jeans last week, the newspaper said.

Locals claim police have been taking bribes of just $10 to allow people to pan in the fields.

Three panners died in Chiadzwa on Wednesday when they were crushed by falling rock. There may be up to 15 victims but divers have not found more bodies.

The Manica Post said police had launched an operation to seal off the mines.

Mugabe disclosed in a birthday interview on state ZBC television on Thursday that diamonds worth $15bn had been looted in Chiadzwa, most likely by the mining firms.
