Harare - Zimbabwe has confirmed the number of female citizens from the country who are currently on death row in China, and it is far less than what was initially anticipated, The Herald has reported.

Joey Bimha, the country's secretary of foreign affairs, confirmed that less than thee female Zimbabwean nationals were currently on death row in Beijing, with a further seven being held on drug trafficking charges.

Bimha's statement quelled fears that hundreds of Zimbabwean women were being held in China, after comments made by National Assembly member Beata Nyamupinga on Tuesday.

Nyamupinga had stated that there were more than 1 000 Zimbabwean women in Chinese prisons, with over 200 being held on death row, according to News Day.

Along with reports of the official figure being far less, Bimha also confirmed that those who awaited their fate in Chinese prisons had been found with drugs in their suitcases, with one having died while in custody.

"Our embassy has told us that less than 10 Zimbabweans, mostly women, were arrested in China for drug trafficking. About two or three were on death row after they were found with drugs in suitcases and one has since died in custody. These are the last figures we last got from our embassy in China. We will, however, check with our embassy in Beijing to establish if the figure has risen to that level," Bimha was quoted as saying.
