Masvingo - An 85-year-old Zimbabwean man from Matova village, Masvingo province, has been arrested after being caught raping his four-year-old niece, a report said on Friday.

The state-owned Chronicle newspaper revealed that the unidentified man lured the young girl by promising to hand-pick guavas for her at the family garden after the toddler's mother had gone to church.

At the garden, the man laid the toddler on the ground and forced himself on her.

He was, however, caught by the young girl's mother who had returned from church and was worried when she could not locate them.

The man was arrested and would appear in court soon.

Early this year, the Sunday News revealed that Masvingo accounted for at least 4% of rape cases in the country last year.

The report further indicated that rape cases involving juveniles in the country last year were 285 as compared to 274 in 2014.
