Healthy, smiling Grace Mugabe in SA with hubby

2015-04-08 12:10

Cape Town – Contrary to media reports that Grace Mugabe was gravely ill and suffering from cancer, Zimbabwe's first lady appeared healthy and cheerful when she jetted into South Africa with her husband President Robert Mugabe on Tuesday.

The first family arrived in Pretoria on Tuesday afternoon for their first state visit in 21 years. The visit will consolidate bilateral relations with South Africa.

Grace, who was wearing a dress with blue trim, appeared fit and strong.

The first lady was last week reported to be seriously ill, with the media quoting family sources as saying she had cancer.

"The first lady is suffering from colon cancer. She had an operation while on holiday in Singapore and has gone back there for treatment. About 30cm was removed, but now she is in a bad state. That is why she disappeared from the public spotlight," a relative was quoted as saying by the Zimbabwe Independent.

A picture showing a frail-looking Grace also went viral on social media and fuelled speculation over her health.

In the picture, a seemingly "wasted" Grace appears to be inside State House, standing next to an unidentified woman.

Following the couple's arrival in SA, some took to Twitter, to marvel at her "gorgeous" look.

Mugabe and his wife were welcomed by President Jacob Zuma at the Union Buildings on Wednesday.
