'I am fit as a fiddle,' declares Mugabe

2012-02-21 09:23

Harare - Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe scoffed at fears about his health and said he was "fit as a fiddle" as he turned 88 on Tuesday.

"The day will come when I will become sick," Mugabe, who is Africa's oldest ruler, said in an interview on state-owned Radio Zimbabwe on the eve of his birthday.

"As of now I am fit as a fiddle."

He poked fun at media reports about a life-threatening ailment.

"I have died many times," he said. "That's where I have beaten Christ. Christ died once and resurrected once. I have died and resurrected and I don't know how many times I will die and resurrect."

Mugabe's health has been the subject of much speculation, especially since WikiLeaks last year released a 2008 US diplomatic cable saying central bank chief Gideon Gono had told then-US ambassador James McGee that Mugabe had prostate cancer and had been advised by doctors he had less than five years to live.

Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe since independence in 1980, has repeatedly shot down rumours he is sick.

He visited Singapore several times last year, with his spokesperson saying the president had gone for cataract surgery amid repeated media reports that he was suffering from cancer.

Mugabe's health has been cited as one reason that a faction of his Zanu-PF party has pushed to rush new elections.

Mugabe has already been named as the party's candidate for the polls, which he has said should be held this year.

He turned 88 on Tuesday and a birthday rally will be held at a stadium in the eastern border city of Mutare on Saturday.

The celebrations will include a football match by top league teams and a concert featuring the country's top musicians.

On Tuesday, the state-run Herald newspaper carried 22 pages of messages congratulating the veteran ruler.

So Patrick you think it's fine then that millions of Zimbabweans suffered and died in Zim because of him? You think it's fine that Zim has been destroyed to such a point that Zim's own people had to flee their own country?I dare you to say that to someone who watched their children starve in Zim because of this man. So easy to shout rasist Patrick when you don't even know for sure that Freddie is white. You sir are a rasist

  • Johan - 2012-02-21 10:28

    "fears about his health" Huh?

      TSR01 - 2012-02-21 10:48

Him being healthy is something everyone fears. The old donkey needs to kick the bucket so that Zimbabwe can be rebuilt as a new country. Goodness knows, if Zimbabwe got rebuilt, renamed, and governed by a reliable group, I might consider moving there - where there is work, there is wealth. (Work is rewarding, in many ways)

  • Eric Maseko - 2012-02-21 10:30

Moron & worker of iniquity! How dare u equate yoself to your Maker? You are a creature period! In your case equated to an untamed four footed beasts like Nebuchadnezzar a fool who though he had it all figured out until his kingdom was weighted & found weak, divided & given to other nations to be governed! So is your destiny greedy man!

  • SGL - 2012-02-21 10:33

Pity a REAL pity!!! He is dragging his heels to avoid going to hell.... but it will eventually happen, he will have to snuff it some or other time and old Nick is rubbing his hands in anticipation of the happy event!

  • Tanie - 2012-02-21 10:38

Stop telling us your wishes for Mugabe, he is not afraid to tell you how he is exactly feeling about you.Tell him you cowards. I adore him one thing for sure, he will go down as a hero AND you and I knows that.

      Gerhard - 2012-02-21 10:45

He starves his own people, the very people that keep voting for him. How the hell is he a hero? Go live in ZimBOBwe for a few months and then come back and tell us what a hero he is. Bob is genuinely African, say something bad about him and he will kill you. There is no debate. Is that really how you want to live?

  • ReunionofIntelligentMinds - 2012-02-21 10:42

Nobody makes negative comments of Christ and comes away with it. Mugabe's time will come. Just a pity we will not see it.Ol' nick is preparing a special patch for mr M.

  • drishworth - 2012-02-21 10:43

Unfortunately I don't believe in hell because for sure this is where Mugabe belongs. In this case I'd like to make an exception. However, a very slow, painfull death during which time he has time to reflect on his despicable life would suffice. Heaven forbid he sees the light just before he dies and receives forgiveness that'll see him spending an eternity in heaven.

  • Djim - 2012-02-21 10:45

reading that the thing is as dead as a door nail would have been good news

  • Max - 2012-02-21 11:00

Why is it that all African leaders at some point begin to feel that they are some godlike being? To me this tendency clearly explains why they are not fit to govern.

      betsy.compaan - 2012-02-21 11:37

So it's ok to kill your own brothers as long as you can get fat of their blood that spills down the streets...Liberation doesn't exist in his dictionary and obviously you don't know the meaning.

@ Samora, bro I would advise you to go and research that idiot..do you know why so many Tanzanians are scatered all over Africa Especially SA? its because that fool Nyerere abused his powers, here you have a country rich in natural resources but the people are starving, I had first hand experience of what was going on in Tanzania, not because I was born there but because of the research we did on the country, so next time before you get on your high horse and call people empty vessels maybe you shoul first check yourself out cause you might be talking about the reflection in the mirror..you follow

Pitty he is not fit as a door knob..

  • Graham - 2012-02-21 11:23

Almost all politicians are sociopaths! Even bordering on psychopaths while some actually are! So they aren’t capable of caring about anyone or anything but themselves. This is especially true in Africa, millions die of starvation and diseases while the elite live like kings. It’s quite sickening really! There needs to be a new way choosing leaders.

  • Herbert - 2012-02-21 11:30

  • Samora Machel Thamsanqa - 2012-02-21 11:39

Dear white South Africans, I am not going to hate President Robert Mugabe because you differ with his policies. Spare yourself some time and stop swearing at us and calling us names, you are not special beings!! I also hope & pray that we be mature enough to appreciate that we are different people with differing opinions & that to disagree with someone is not an invitation to hate or be resentful or hurtful

      Felix - 2012-02-21 12:09

Haha, tell that to your hero who slaughtered different tribes and has opposition party members beaten and locked up. Dumb ass.

      betsy.compaan - 2012-02-21 12:10

Don't tempt bokvoet....he's just around the corner.

  • Samora Machel Thamsanqa - 2012-02-21 11:51

To him, the independence of Zimbabwe was not merely a nationalistic achievement. It was an African achievement and we had to celebrate it through a song that captured that African dream. The anthem "Nkosi Sikelela Africa" was composed by a black South African around 1880 in a compound at the gold mines in Johannesburg. Robert Mugabe made the remaining vestiges of colonialism in Africa his top target. The independence of Zimbabwe was meaningless unless South Africa and Namibia were free, he would declare. That required a colossal effort and monumental human sacrifice. Zimbabwean lives were lost in pursuit of that African dream. But the biggest test would come at the expiry of the entrenched ten year clause regarding the land issue in the Lancaster House Agreement. The willing-buyer-willing-seller clause fell away and was duly replaced by the compulsory Acquisition Act, but Robert Mugabe would delay the compulsory acquisitions of former white commercial farms because he feared that might complicate the South African independence struggle. Imagine the land reform programme in 2000 happening in 1991. The South African whites, with the absolute support of the West, would never have let South Africa go for fear that the country would experience a similar land reform programme. I wonder whether South Africans are aware of that fact. But even if they know, what difference would it make anyway? It's only now they seem to appreciate the role Africa played in their freedom. The whites had misled them to believe they were not part of Africa and they believed it. It's the Namibians who openly appreciate the role that Africa, particularly Zimbabwe, played in their freedom. But it would be naive to blame the South African people for such lack of appreciation. Such appreciation doesn't happen on its own. It requires political leadership to foster it. It requires a political leader to sow it in the hearts of the people. Robert Mugabe is one such leader. For some strange reason, Nelson Mandela did not plant it in his people thus setting a disastrous precedent that Thabo Mbeki grappled with

      Tommy - 2012-02-21 12:06

It also required the help of North Korean trained soldiers to kill ±20000 Matabeles. What a hero.
