Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has said that he won't be protecting any government officials accused of corruption, adding that those accused of graft must, however, be given a chance to answer for their crimes in a court of law, reports say.

Cape Town – Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe says he thanks God for giving him a long life, as he turns 91 on Saturday.

According to Zimbabwe’s state owned newspaper The Herald, Mugabe, who was in Pretoria where he chaired the Southern African Development Community (SADC) double troika summit on Lesotho, told journalists he was happy to reach the age of 91.

"I am happy God has looked after me. And I am happy also that my relatives, my friends and they include of course political friends who have assisted us in the struggle, South Africa included, have made me happier that I have seen my country become an independent one," Mugabe was quoted as saying.

Mugabe was born on 21 February and his birthday celebrations are set to take place on 28 February in the resort town of Victoria Falls.

Mugabe's Zanu-PF party says it is planning to raise no less than $1m for his birthday bash.

The Chronicle newspaper, reported earlier this week that wild animals, including elephants, were set to be slaughtered for Mugabe’s party, after a donation from a prominent farmer.

At least 20 000 people are expected to attend.
