Land acquisition won't stop, says Mugabe

2012-08-03 07:44

Lusaka - Zimbabwe's president Robert Mugabe on Thursday said sanctions slapped by the West on selected members and institutions of his administration, had failed and should be lifted.

Last month the European Union promised to ease most of the sanctions only if the country holds a "credible" vote on a new constitution, a key reform before new elections.

But veteran leader Mugabe would remain on an EU blacklist.

"The sanctions are a deliberate ploy to make us fail as Zimbabwe, but I can tell you that these sanctions have failed and they are not justified and should be removed," Mugabe told a banquet hosted in his honour during a state visit to Zambia.

Former colonial ruler Britain proposed the suspension of the 2002 sanctions in order to promote reforms in the southern African nation, much along the lines of the lifting of sanctions earlier this year to reward reformers in Myanmar.

Mugabe said the sanctions, imposed at the height of a violent land grab campaign and after a violent election, had been aimed at stopping his government from seizing the land.

"We refused to stop the land acquisition. The land in Zimbabwe is ours."

EU ministers said sanctions would be lifted against most of the 112 Zimbabweans still listed on a decade-old EU asset freeze and travel ban.

"We will continue to fight for these sanctions to be removed. Zimbabwe is for Zimbabweans and we will not surrender," said Mugabe.

He said despite the sanctions the "economy has grown, the mines are growing, inflation has gone down".

What a great ambassador for Africa. The reason why he ruined such a great country

bongani, I'm betting you are the real racist here, I reckon you are a real WHITE AFRICAN hater.

      steve.ritchie.739 - 2012-08-03 08:31

No Marumobongani. It is a fact. Mad Bob is a self-serving dictator who has done squat for Zimbabwe, other than reduce a once-productive country to ruin. That is an undeniable fact. Then he blames the west for his woes when sanctions are imposed and now has got his begging-bowl out again. What a hypocrite.

...Robber Mugabe from Zimrobwe... ...the great destroyer....

      paul.lotter - 2012-08-03 08:58

bongani...can you spot the difference in Zimbabwe when the white man farmed there and then got booted by the black man?? The difference is back then Zim was great, not because the farmer was white but because the country had a healthy economy and people were not dying of hunger...#bonganitheidiot

      cliff.slabbert - 2012-08-03 09:22

Just like the absolute racist that you are marumobongani, Mugabe through this same hatred and spite destroyed a beautiful and viable country.

      Revelgen - 2012-08-03 09:34

Marumobongani, are you flippin' BLIND? Under Smith Zimbabwe was prosperous, people had jobs and there was an agricultural surplus. Now that this disgusting dictator Mugabe has robbed profitable farms, Zimbabwe has descended into chaos, importing food and forcing 3 million Zimbabwean refugees to flee to South Africa. Why is it that when confronted with the absolute truth, you do not see it?

      mike.boylen - 2012-08-03 12:10

Zimbabwe is one of the countries begging for aid on British TV. Mugabe reduces his people to abject poverty and now appeals to the hated white British people to feed his people.

      Cavefacio - 2012-08-03 17:10

Andre remember that it is only sanctions against 112 people in Zim. The rest of them can come and go and trade like they want to. So if 112 people need to have sanctions lifted to restore the country then it means only one thing to me: DICTATOR!!! 112 people either have too much power or Mugabe is more deluded than a gnat on coke.

      Nicholas - 2012-08-05 07:13

marumbongani...are you really that stupid? the black people in zimbabwe are worse off and don't want him as their leader...he just rigs the elections..

Can someone please explain this african mentality to me? Taking land that doesnt belong to you, even murdering entire families so that you can take it, and then moving squatters onto it, so that they can sit and stare at their land all day, while its crops die, because they have no clue how to make any good use of this land that they feel so entitled to. How many farms have these 'people' taken, and yet, Zimbabweans are starving, their is almost no productivity in Zimbabwe. It's like hijacking someone for their car, but you don't know how to drive, or is it just about taking what doesn't belong to you. And please, I am so sick of hearing how the white man stole the land from the blacks, they probably did it, because they knew the blacks wouldn't know what to do with it, atleast when the white farmers owned the farms, Zimbabweans had food!

      phillys.winterbottom - 2012-08-03 09:53

Mugabe is just the current leader of an economic idea that will not die with his removal! Black Zimbabweans are determined to take control of their country's economic backbone, with or without Mugabe's leadership. Mugabe is merely a messenger, a representative of forces in the country much greater than his person! Zimbabwe's economic liberation and entrustment to its indigenes will go on without him! Zimbabweans have tasted blood and will not let up, regardless of what happens to Mugabe!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-08-03 09:29

A country's currency makes not its economic backbone. It's only a means to facilitate local trade. How much is the Saudi Riyal worth. How many countries keep it as reserves. Even the Saudis demamd US dollars for their expots. Must try harder!

Its ar*eholes like you that give blacks a bad name. Ironically, over 80% of the food aid given to your glorious african economic liberation experiment-Zimbobwe, comes from the "colonialists" your glorious syphilitic Mugarbage despises the most, England and the USA. Another great irony is that much of the maize that these two counties give to Zimboland to feed over 1.7 million staving people, is bought by these generous countries from ex zim farmers who now farm just over the border in Zambia, and they are now printing money!!! If you really knew anything about mugarbage's pogrom of the zim farmers, then you would also know that when he kicked them all out, he put over 600 000 of his own people out of work!!! a fact not spoken about by you arse-wipes!!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-08-03 14:13

Fidel, you remind me of Thabo Mbeki who always sounded like he kept an Oxford dictionary at his bedside - impressive vocabulary, but not much else.

      smellarat.smith - 2012-08-04 22:41

Some citizens from neighboring countries have traditionally also worked on South Africa's mines. However, that certainly does not explain the massive uptick in migration from Zimbabwe since your friend Mugabe started grabbing land without compensation, even farms that were acquired after 1980. Three million migrants are certainly more indicative of mass famine or a war zone. Or disastrous policies on a national scale. And you frame this as "inception pains". Pathetic. Vocabulary doth not compensate for lack of rational thought. A gilded turd remains a turd.

      Nicholas - 2012-08-05 07:26

      pisciotta - 2012-08-12 15:17

Wekunetsavamwe - I've been to Zim a few times for work purposes. Yea, me a white guy from America, because Zims didn’t have the intelligence in the country to implement the financial software they purchased from the USA. I found ZIM to be disgusting. One huge township is how I would describe it. It was a safe bet for you to compare Zim to SA. Neither is that great. Neither one can compare to the USA or other civilized countries. But then, yours is a black nation. I had no expectations of it being decent and I was correct. No totally black nation that I have seen is worthy of being considered habitable by humans. Have you ever wondered why Sub-Saharan Africa has yet to produce a decent civilized nation? Why do you think that is? Let me point to Zim - all black - the perfect example of the reason why Africa will always be in the dark socially, economically and intellectually.

I've read some of your comments on this page and can only conclude you have serious issues with white people. Mugabe challenged white landowners with force. If he didnt have the milatary behind him just like the colonials did, would he really have been so successful with his land grab policies.

lets not generalise and say whites will not ever like blacks. it just varies form one individual to another. ther is also some black people who will never like whiteman. There is also blacks who cannot stand other blacks same applies to whites as well. (remember the xenophobic attacks). All we have to consider here is who is best for a country and its people regardless of the race. Uncle Bob messed up big time guys there is nowaywe can pretend we donotknow. As long as we all do not accept thi FACT there is no way we will be able to save zimbo. We all want to go back home. Those sanctions are just targetted on certain individuals in Bob's camp so there is no way we can say they are causing Zimmbos to suffer-its just a certain group of people.
