Clinton too junior to criticise Mugabe, says aide

US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton is too junior to criticise President Robert Mugabe, who "relates to sitting heads of states and not aspiring candidates", his spokesperson has reportedly said.

Harare - Zimbabwe state media reports that President Robert Mugabe has assured regional leaders that adoption of a new constitution is on track ahead of proposed elections to end the nation's fragile coalition government.

According to the Herald newspaper on Wednesday, Mugabe met South African President Jacob Zuma, the chief regional mediator on Zimbabwe, on the sidelines of the United Nations general assembly in New York.

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, the former opposition leader, has charged that Mugabe's party has blocked constitutional reforms.

A 15-nation southern African political and economic bloc set constitutional reforms as a condition for free elections.

Mugabe told Zuma that a stakeholders conference on the constitution is set to go ahead in Harare next month and regional leaders "will not be let down".
