Zimbabwe mermaids appeased at pumphouse

Water is flowing again to a small, arid town in northern Zimbabwe after a traditional ceremony was held to appease "mermaids" who had been terrifying engineers trying to start the pumps.

War vets battle dispair

A dusty road leads to the village of Wedza, where veterans of Zimbabwe's liberation war eke out a meagre living on their farm cooperative, which after a promising start now brings only despair.

Harare - Zimbabwe's prime minister says he is thankful for South African efforts to rescue his country's coalition government.

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, speaking at a party rally on Sunday, said South African President Jacob Zuma could visit soon.

Zuma's spokesperson did not comment on a possible visit by his boss, but said in a statement that a delegation of mediators sent by Zuma was leaving for Zimbabwe on Sunday.

Tsvangirai boycotted the unity government for three weeks, returning in early November after receiving assurances Zuma would intervene to help resolve a number of issues.

Those include charges that forces loyal to President Robert Mugabe were attacking Tsvangirai's supporters.
