Swiss tourist fined for insulting Mugabe

2012-09-13 14:12

Harare - Zimbabwean court officials say a Swiss tourist has been fined $200 for insulting President Robert Mugabe.

Thomas Fischer from Altnau, Switzerland was convicted by a court in north-western Zimbabwe for criticising Mugabe in an argument with border officials at the lake resort town of Kariba.

Prosecutors alleged that during a delay in border formalities, Fischer said Mugabe "knew how to screw people, especially foreigners".

Insulting Mugabe is an offence under sweeping security laws and prosecutions are common. Earlier this year, a Zimbabwean salesman spent two months in jail after being found with satirical cartoons depicting a naked, skeletal Mugabe on his mobile phone.

A Zimbabwean carpenter was arrested in February after he questioned whether Mugabe still had the strength to blow up balloons at his 88th birthday.

  • Shaun McDermott - 2012-09-13 15:44

why dont you beat up Peter Thatchel again and leave the tourists alone???

  • vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-09-13 15:46

As a rule, if you are in a foreign country you should show due respect to their laws. If you do not want to, then stay at home. It was silly of the tourist to behave petulantly in someone else's country. How would he feel if someone had gone to Switzerland and insulted their people for not having a backbone to stand up to Hitler? Having said that, how would a tourist know the law when he is entering the country? Is he expected to know that he could be fined, imprisoned or killed if he says certain things? Is the onus on him to know that? I wonder!

      hermann.hanekom - 2012-09-13 20:58

If you know your history you will know that Hitler did not order the Wehrmacht to invade Switzerland. Having lived there I do know that the Swiss were fully prepared to resist any German invasion.

  • timothy.crowley.96 - 2012-09-13 16:12

Most blame Mugabe for this??? I blame all his fellow countrymen that support him! You are only as strong as those who support you. The Zimbabwean people must be happy with him and the way they live otherwise they would have revolted a long time ago, unless they are spineless, which in this case the latter is true!

  • sisie.indola - 2012-09-13 16:18

But it's okay for Mugabe to insult a country. Two faced ba****d and so hypocritical.

  • kagiso.nuru - 2012-09-13 16:19

Hey Mugarbage you're a douche, *middle finger* come and get me if u can. lol

  • irene.buthelezi.1 - 2012-09-13 19:13

These dicktators have to demand respect because deep inside they know they're complete tossers and don't deserve any respect whatsoever. Same reason why their photos have to be hung up everywhere to make them feel very important. If only they knew what bok drols they actually are.

  • snethembah - 2012-09-13 21:05

I couldn't help but laugh at the baloon blowing incident.

  • judah.moyo - 2012-09-14 08:35

I do not like Mugabe but the truth has to be said. Insulting anyone , the president included is unlawful and a violation of that person's rights. If you insult a street kid you must be prossecuted, if you insult a worker, a middle class person or whoever Mugabe included, you must be arrested.

  • CaL044 - 2012-10-07 11:42

Is that an insult? I couldn't find words strong enough to denigrate that megalomaniac!
