Worries over diamond whistleblower

2010-06-17 21:43

Special Report

Washington - The US is worried about the continued detention of a prominent rights activist arrested on claims he gave false information about Zimbabwe's diamond industry.

State Department spokesperson Mark Toner told reporters on Thursday that Zimbabwe's delay on a bail decision for Farai Maguwu will prevent him from participating in meetings next week in Israel on so-called "blood diamonds".

Toner says Maguwu has rigorously investigated diamond field rights violations.

Toner says the US expects Zimbabwe to treat Maguwu fairly and to quickly review his case.

Maguwu denies charges he passed stolen documents on troop violations in eastern Zimbabwe diamond fields to the international diamond control body.
